Giovanna Francisco (she/her) is a San Diego based movement artist and creative with passions for photography, choreography, the natural world, and social justice. She strongly believes in the power of human connection to create art and reimagine space. Giovanna’s artistic philosophy seeks to center the world in a colorful sense while exploring human relationships in community & in conjunction to their environments. Her movement practice centers dance as a tool for exploration and connection.

Gio is deeply fascinated by artistic processes as conscious explorations of creative possibility. She gravitates toward making collages of paper sentiments and photos she has taken, improvisation-based movement, intentional and collaborative choreography, and poetry inspired by connection to the outdoors.

An experience she holds dear to her heart is participating in the Unplugged Dance workshop in Lefkada, Greece facilitated by Rafaela Sahyoun. Being immersed in the ecologically diverse natural space in the village of Neochori, dancing with beautiful humans from all over the world was such a gift. This experience harnessed the essence of humanness in her eyes.

Giovanna has her BA in Sociology, a BA in Dance, and a minor in Education Studies from the University of California, San Diego. Within the San Diego community, Giovanna has performed and created work as both an independent artist and community dancer. In the Summer of 2023, she had her first Art Residency in the garden space of Art Produce where she spent her days cultivating movement inspired by the bugs she observed to create her first evening length work. In 2024, she was a part of the 10-month long (R)evolution Mentorship Program offered by Disco Riot which concluded in a 10 week long residency. She currently freelances as a dancer and choreographer in Southern California and teaches dances to ages 3 through adult.

Giovanna is always looking to collaborate and connect for different projects ! See her contact page to get connected!
